Selecting a New Tube for a Laser Cutting and Engraving Machine

Since its invention in the early 1960s, the laser has become an increasingly common presence in everyday life. Early on, lasers of various kinds were typically found only in research laboratories and other exotic settings. Today, they crop up everywhere from the insides of optical disc players to hand-held pointers that produce beams rated at milliwatts of power.

Lasers have also become increasingly important to small businesses of many kinds. When endowed with enough power, laser beams can be used to cut or engrave a wide range of materials and items in highly accurate, controllable fashions. Most such machines that small businesses buy today are based on sealed glass laser tubes that enable the characteristic phenomenon of lasing. There are a variety of significant ways by which one CO2 laser tube can differ from others.

Glass Tubes for Laser Machines Look Similar but Differ in Important Ways

Most tubes with glass housings look generally the same, but this similarity can be deceptive. Two of the most important respects in which one tube can differ from others are:

Size. Tubes of a fairly wide variety of sizes are readily available. In some cases, a laser machine will be able to accept tubes of a particular diameter and a number of different lengths. Because the volume of gas contained within a tube influences its ability to convert electric power into a laser beam, longer tubes tend to have higher power ratings. More powerful tubes can typically cut or engrave more quickly and will sometimes be able to work with materials that others cannot. A 150 watt laser tube might be able to cut through even thick sheets of metal, for example, where one with a third of that power rating could only engrave the surface.

Construction. Every glass tube has to be sealed once it has been assembled and charged with gas. There are a few ways to achieve this, some of which are more difficult and expensive to carry out than others. At the same time, a more effective and longer-lasting sealing technique can allow a tube to provide more service before failing. Even though laser tube price might increase as a result, a higher-quality part like this could still end up being a better buy.

Choosing the Best Tube Should Be Straightforward

Fortunately, the best tube for a particular machine should normally be fairly easy to find and buy. In most cases, cutting and engraving machine manufacturers will make it clear which parts will work best with their equipment.
